The Pathology Department of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala–Kano (NOHDK) is an essential diagnostic and research arm of the hospital. It provides comprehensive laboratory services to support the hospital’s mandate in Orthopaedic, trauma, plastic, and reconstructive surgery as well as general patient care.
Through accurate laboratory testing and histopathological evaluation, the department helps clinicians arrive at precise diagnoses, guide treatment decisions, and ensure effective patient management.
OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of the Pathology Department at NOHDK are to:
Provide reliable, accurate, and timely laboratory results that aid clinicians in diagnosis and management.
Offer a full range of pathology and laboratory services to meet the needs of Orthopaedic and general patients.
Maintain high professional and ethical standards in laboratory practice.
Support clinical research by providing laboratory and histopathological data for studies related to trauma, infection, and Orthopaedic diseases.
Promote training and continuing education for medical laboratory scientists, interns, Medical Laboratory Scientist and Medical Laboratory Technicians on SIWES posting.
Implement and sustain quality assurance programs that ensure precision and reliability of results.
FUNCTIONS
Diagnostic Services:
Provide laboratory support for accurate diagnosis of diseases and conditions affecting bones, joints, soft tissues, and other organs. Offer screening services for pre-operative and post-operative patients.
Clinical Support:
Work closely with surgeons and clinicians to interpret laboratory findings for effective treatment and follow-up.
Research:
Participate in institutional and collaborative research in areas such as infection control, bone pathology, and trauma-related disorders.
Training and Capacity Building:
Serve as a training Centre for medical laboratory scientists, interns, Medical Laboratory Scientist and Medical Laboratory Technicians on SIWES posting and residents, ensuring continuous professional development.
Quality Assurance:
Maintain internal and external quality control programs to ensure accuracy, reliability, and standardization of test results.
Public Health Contribution:
Assist in disease surveillance, infection prevention, and control activities within the hospital and community.
