The Physiotherapy department is one of the clinical departments of the hospital and has been involved in offering quality services to its numerous patients. The department is as old as the Hospital itself.
 
The department is deeply involved in restoring lost functions after an injury or trauma. We co-manage patients with various Orthopaedic, Paediatric, Medical and Neurological Conditions, and recently Women and Pelvic Health Units. The department plays vital roles in the rehabilitation of ever increasing number of Spinal Cord injured patients. Our roles in patients’ management is all encompassing including restorative, rehabilitative, curative and preventive roles. Physical means are largely employed to achieve the above mentioned roles.
 
The main building of the department is a one storey building. The upstairs houses the offices, seminar room, etc while the down stairs houses cubicles for patient’s treatment, record office, open space used as patient’s reception and demarcated into male and female section. There are the consultation cubicles. The other part of the building is a bungalow housing two gymnasiums (male and female) with a call room in the middle.

SERVICES RENDERED: The department operates basically three major units and six sub-units. The major units are:

Gymnasium
Two of these units are demarcated according to the hospital’s team system.

Each unit is headed by an officer not below the rank of an Assistant Director.
 
 
The Physiotherapy Department functions to treat, rehabilitate patients with existing ailments/disabilities; prevent disabilities or its reoccurrence as well as promote well-being.
 
The department is on call 24 hours. The list of the 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd on call are submitted every month to the compound office of the Nursing Services, Medical Director, Audit, Accounts and Clinical Services. Aside the hospital’s Consultant Ward Round, the physiotherapy department conducts two departmental ward rounds each month. All the teams of the department are involved.
 
Every month, a physiotherapist from the department visits the Torrey Home in Kano to render physiotherapy services to the children in the home. However, the torry home visits have been suspended on the request of the Torry Home. This is to enable them put the home in proper shape.
 
World Physiotherapy Day was celebrated for the first time in the Hospital in a grand style. It was titled “The Role of Physiotherapy in Physical Activity in Healthy Ageing”. There was a hospital awareness campaign, including walk round the hospital in a celebratory style that involved our patients, particularly the elderly, Patients and well-wishers. There was assessment and treatment of elderly patients and plenty to eat.
